IRS Announces Tax Return Processing Delay for Certain Individual Returns

January 20, 2011

The IRS will not be able to start processing certain individual returns until February 14, 2011.

The individual returns affected by the delay are those with the following:
      • Itemized deductions on Schedule A
      • Higher education tuition fees and deduction on Form 8917
      • Educator Expense deductions

Even with this processing delay, these returns can and should still be started as soon as possible. However, the completed returns will be held for actual e-filing and processing until February 14th.

The IRS has announced that it needs time to update its computer systems for the renewal of three tax provisions that were set to expire at the end of 2009, but were extended with the late enactment of the Tax Relief, Unemployment Insurance Reauthorization, and Job Creation Act of 2010 signed on December 17th.
